Recorded in the two upstairs bedrooms of his grandfather's house in Pleasantville, All That Matters was painstakingly layered by bouncing tracks from an open-reel tape deck to a stereo cassette deck, then back again and again. Each instrument and voice track is a complete take, because there was no way to punch-in or punch-out in the middle of a take. Recording took about six weeks.
CW got some great natural reverb effects by placing a guitar amp or a microphone in the stairwell. Of course, he'd only do that when his grandfather was out, in order to keep his makeshift studio intact. Then again, Grandpa was almost completely deaf, so it may not have made much difference anyway.
Because older tracks would begin to lose clarity as newer tracks were laid down, CW developed a technique that involved laying down a guide track first on acoustic guitar, then percussion, followed by bass, additional guitars, and vocals. The sound quality isn't too bad, considering the conditions.
But let's face it: CW never wanted to have to go through this process again. As soon as he finished All That Matters, he started saving up for a multi-track recorder.
