CW Smith bio

Everything you ever wanted to know about CW Smith.

Demos for current projects

Here you'll find rough, unfinished "sketches" of songs intended for A Function Of Time, or for other projects CW has his hands in from time to time. If you pay close attention, you might hear lyrics, chords, tempos and arrangements change from demo to completed project.

Studio albums

CW began became a solo artist after the breakup of his band Sound System in the summer of 1989, with the release of I-80 Westbound. Originally working on analog multitrack tape and releasing exclusively on cassette, CW went digital in 1998 with the remastered version of South Of Dakota. Now, all products are released exclusively on CD. Albums from 1993 and earlier are now out of print, but most are compiled in the 4-CD set, Early Works.

The Best of CW Smith

Three Best Of collections in three years? Well, remember that CW had other musical projects going on, too -- including Sound System, the audubon society, Indigo Dream, The Word Green, Amethyst, Mystic East, Village Idiots, and Plan B. Between all these projects and his solo work, CW had his fingers in four to six new albums a year. Toward the end of each year, CW would choose the highlights of his solo and side projects and collect them in a convenient package.

Each of the Best Of collections contained one or more "new" songs -- either recorded specifically for the package, or rescued from the cutting room floor. These "new" songs are included in the 4-CD set, Early Works.

1989 Blue Street: The Best of CW Smith
1990 Peace Of My Mind: The Best of CW Smith, volume II
1991 Long Island Boy: The Best of CW Smith, volume III

Special releases

Never intended for retail sale, these collections were put together quickly, with no artwork, and handed out to friends and family in very small quantities. Sometimes CW would package them with a retail album as a "freebie."

1989 Nothing Flashy
1990 "10 February" and 4 July
1992 RADIOactive: Live at KFMG
1994 RADIOactive II: Live at KFMG
