1991 • CW Smith VII

Wait, you say, I only count three studio albums! Okay, CW got maybe just a little over-ambitious and also counted the special releases Nothing Flashy and "10 February" and 4 July, plus the Best Of collections Blue Street and Peace Of My Mind. That makes this his VIIth album.

CW had a lot of fun recording this album, which features "Say Tonight" (one of his all-time favorites); "indigo dream," composed with his friend Lace for their band that never really got off the ground; "Old Car," written way back in 1987 and arranged here with sort of a country flavor; "Another Stranger," written by friend and collaborator Rob Straughn back in the 1970s; and three compositions with his friend and recurring bandmate Aaron Hudspeth: "The Voice of Reason," "What Color's the Sky On Your Planet?," and "That's What It's All About."

CWSmith VII was recorded on a brand-new Yamaha four-track cassette recorder and a Korg MIDI drum sequencer, at his dorm room at Simpson College in Indianola. He'd lay down tracks between classes when other students weren't likely to be around, and finished in about four weeks.
