1989 • I-80 Westbound

When it became clear that Sound System wouldn't be recording any new material, CW asked to borrow Steve's Fostex 4-track recorder for a couple of weeks. He recorded some acoustic arrangements (with a few electric instruments added) of songs intended for Sound System, newer songs the band hadn't heard yet, and a few written on the spur of the moment. After ten days, the result: CW's first solo album, I-80 Westbound.

CW played all the instruments and sang all the vocal parts on I-80 Westbound -- the only time CW completed a project with no outside musicians. Cover art was designed by CW's new girlfriend, Donna Jo Wallace, and inside the cassette J-card was a collage of maps from the Simpson College library.

One of CW's favorite tracks on the album was "Listening To the Rain," which highlighted a sound composite of a thunderstorm, recorded on three separate tracks, then mixed back to a fourth. The resulting aural illusion, mixed into the background, sounds like a Deluge.
