Psychological Furniture is CW's only album recorded outside of Iowa, during his stay in New York state in 1991. At least it was completed there -- some of the parts for "Dr. Jones," "Say Tonight," and "A Colder Day" were laid down at CW's apartment in Des Moines a couple months earlier.
CW talks about the process: "I'd work until about 2 AM at this night club on Long Island, drive back to the house where Ernest and I were staying, then I'd stay up until dawn, working out arrangements for the album, very quietly, on an acoustic guitar.
"I'd sleep for about three hours, then get up and record the acoustic, electric, and vocal parts while I was alone in the house. Then I'd sleep another two hours, get up for work and start all over again."
The most exciting part of his stay in New York? Work on the album had to be delayed for a night when Hurricane Bob came through. "We never lost power, but I almost didn't make it back to the house that night, either." Despite the delays, Psychological Furniture was completed in about three weeks.
The album title comes from a line in a poem written by his fiancée (now his wife), Donna Jo Wallace.
