Although Busted was Sound System's debut album, it already shows them in a period of transition: from a cover band looking for gigs to a studio-based band focusing on original compositions and recordings.
Even the track listing itself illustrates transition. Bass player Josh Fisher left in the middle of the session that yielded the four live recordings. He was replaced by Byron Tinder, who was only a member of the band for about two hours. Once the sessions wrapped up, three members -- CW, Steve and Cliff -- left for their respective colleges in three different cities.
When the sessions broke down that hot August day, only four of the planned ten songs were performed and recorded well enough to be used: "Long Tall Sally," "Soul Man," "Keep Your Hands To Yourself," and the original piece "Don't Tell Me." CW and Steve had to come up with a way to fill the rest of the planned album without a band.
CW suggested they use some demos they had recorded a few weeks before on his 2-track open reel deck: the instrumentals "Bonita" and "Before the Storm." CW made a quick recording of the Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere." Steve dusted off a remake of Henry Mancini's "Peter Gunn Theme," a demo he and little brother Phil had recorded in their bedroom. And CW pulled out a live acoustic recording of "For My Love," performed at the high school talent show a couple months earlier.
Closing up the first side was the original April 1986 recording of "For Sherry." Exactly one member of that original lineup was still in the band: CW. The band had been through two different lineups since then. And still more changes were on the horizon.
