On a cold, wintry night over Christmas break, Sound System's three prodigal players -- CW, Steve, and Cliff -- met at Cliff's parents' house for a jam in the newly-finished basement. They invited the rest of the band -- drummer Troy Gould, Steve's brothers Aaron and Phil, and new keyboardist Justin Chastain -- to join them as well. Only Justin was unable to attend due to the severe winter weather conditions.
They jammed on some covers they'd played for years ("Roll Over Beethoven," "You Really Got Me," "25 or 6 to 4," and the "Peter Gunn Theme"), reworked an original song from the Busted album ("Don't Tell Me"), and tried out some new original songs as well ("The Myth," "The Words Don't Come," and "A Little Bitta Rockin' Roll"). Some worked quite well and would be added to their live set, or recorded on their next album, Home Turf. Others fell flat and would never be visited again.
There were changes in store for the band. Steve had moved pretty much exclusively to rhythm guitar as Justin was to take on the keyboards. CW had spent the fall learning bass guitar, so the band wouldn't have to keep finding new bass players every few months. Cliff was in the process of deciding whether he'd be moving back to Iowa for the summers.
And Steve had a new toy: a Fostex X-15 four-track recorder. No more boom boxes. No more 2-track open reels. Now they'd be building their music from the ground up, just like George Martin helped the Beatles build Sgt. Pepper. But now we're getting ahead of ourselves.
