1990 • In Rehearsal III: Folk Songs of Siberia

Steve had managed to finish his two-year drafting degree in just under a year, and had taken a job in Fargo, North Dakota. Seeking a reprieve from a brutally cold Dakota winter, he made a surprise visit back to Iowa, and he and CW called the band together to learn some of the new songs they'd been working on.

Troy Gould had left for college, and this was one of the first times they'd gotten together with new drummer Ray Yenzer. CW secured permission to use the band rehearsal room at Simpson College, and the band set up there to get to know one another once again.

As with most Sound System rehearsals, the band couldn't stay serious for too long. Rampant jamming ensued ("Yer Blues," "Tom Sawyer," "Sweet Jane," "Mony Mony," "Road Kill Blues") between moments of inspired creativity ("Not Every Day," "Sheila Sometimes," "How Can I Show Her" and "Broken Record" were all slated to appear on A Safe Place, and were performed here for the first time).
